The Second Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Akuchukwu Aghazu, has sensationally resigned from her position and her seat on the Federation’s Board, effective immediately.
Her resignation was formally conveyed in a letter addressed to the AFN President and her ‘distinguished colleagues’.
In the letter, Mrs. Aghazu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and reiterated her commitment to good governance, transparency, and athlete-centred development.
Following her departure, Mrs. Aghazu has been removed from the Federation’s official WhatsApp platform, in line with standard administrative procedures.
The National Sports Commission (NSC), which appointed her to the AFN Board in June 2025, has reportedly accepted her resignation.
Her initial appointment had raised eyebrows within the Nigerian athletics community as it reportedly failed to meet the criteria stipulated in the AFN constitution and was a direct imposition by the NSC.
Adding to the controversy, Mrs. Aghazu simultaneously held critical roles as Head of the AFN Road Race Commission and a member of the Elite Athletes Performance Board. This multi-faceted involvement had been flagged by various stakeholders as a clear conflict of interest.
In her resignation letter, Mrs. Aghazu stated her pride in the achievements made during her tenure and pledged to continue supporting athletics and sports development in Nigeria through alternative avenues of service.
