Real Madrid Fined For Fan’s Nazi Gesture

UEFA has sanctioned Real Madrid following an incident of racist fan behavior during their Champions League clash last week.

The governing body confirmed on Friday that the Spanish giants have been fined €15,000 ($17,000) after a supporter was filmed making a Nazi salute before the play-off second leg against Benfica on February 25.

In addition to the fine, the Club was handed a partial stadium closure affecting 500 seats.

However, this sanction has been suspended for a probationary period of one year, meaning it will only be enforced if further similar incidents occur.

In a statement, UEFA’s disciplinary board penalized Madrid “for the racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of its supporters.” The club had already identified and ejected the individual seen performing the gesture in the stands prior to kick-off.

The disciplinary action adds to a heated tie that also saw controversy on the pitch. The first leg in Lisbon was overshadowed by an allegation of racism, with Real winger Vinicius Junior claiming he was targeted by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni—an accusation the Benfica player has denied.

Despite the off-field issues, Real Madrid secured their place in the last 16, where they are set to face Premier League champions Manchester City.
