ASUU Issues 4-day Ultimatum To FG Over Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the federal government, demanding the immediate implementation of the newly – approved salary structure for lecturers or risk a nationwide industrial action.

ASUU president, Christopher Piwuna, gave the warning on during an address at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State.

He said the union would not hesitate to take decisive action capable of shutting down public universities across the country if the government fails to act within the stipulated timeframe.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the federal government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna said.

He stressed that the union expects prompt compliance, warning that any delay would provoke an immediate and firm reaction.

The development comes months after ASUU and the Federal Government reached an agreement in January aimed at addressing lingering disputes and ending the cycle of strikes that has disrupted Nigeria’s university system.

A major component of the agreement is the introduction of a new salary structure intended to improve the welfare of university lecturers and resolve issues tied to the partially implemented 2009 ASUU-FG agreement.

However, concerns over delays in the implementation of the agreement have continued to heighten tensions between both parties, raising fears of another disruption in the nation’s tertiary education sector.
