Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar urged Nigerians to treat vote protection as a civic duty, warning that credible 2027 elections will depend on citizens defending ballots at the polling-unit level.

Atiku made the appeal in Abuja on Tuesday while receiving the Enugu Polling Booths Vanguard for Atiku, a group led by Chief Obodoeze Ocho that focuses on ballot sanctity.

“They believe that every vote must count in 2027. I fully agree,” Atiku said in a statement on X, adding “Protecting votes at Polling Units is vital for the coming elections.”

He told the delegation that voter trust hinges on ordinary people taking ownership of the count: “Votes will count if they are protected by those who cast them.”

Atiku’s comments come as opposition figures press for electoral reforms and greater transparency ahead of the general elections.
