Car Crash: Tiger Woods Pleads Not Guilty, Steps Away For Treatment

Golfing legend Tiger Woods has announced he will be stepping away from the sport to seek treatment, following his recent rollover crash.

The announcement came shortly after his solicitor entered a plea of not guilty in a Florida court to charges stemming from the incident.

Reuters reports that Woods, 50, faces charges of misdemeanor driving under the influence with property damage, and refusal to submit to a urinalysis, according to court documents.

In a statement, Woods said: “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

The PGA Tour expressed its support, stating: “Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport… But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being.”

Woods’ solicitor, Douglas Duncan, submitted the plea and a demand for a jury trial in Martin County Circuit Court, Florida. Woods was not present at the hearing and has waived his arraignment scheduled for April 23rd.

According to the arrest affidavit, Woods told police he was distracted by his mobile phone and radio when his Land Rover crashed near his Jupiter Island home. He was later released on a $1,000 bond. While a breathalyser showed no alcohol, Woods reportedly refused a urinalysis for other drugs. Deputies noted Woods was “sweating profusely” and appeared “lethargic and slow” at the scene, with “bloodshot and glassy” eyes. Two hydrocodone pills were found in his pocket.

This incident follows a 2021 arrest for suspected DUI, where Woods later pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He had previously cited a “bad mix of painkillers” in that case.
