Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz made emphatic starts to their Monte Carlo campaigns on Tuesday, as the battle for the world No.1 ranking intensified ahead of the French Open.

With sprint legend Usain Bolt watching from the stands, the two leading players in men’s tennis powered into the second round with commanding straight-sets victories.

Second seed Sinner required just one hour and four minutes to dismantle France’s Ugo Humbert 6–3, 6–0, extending his remarkable winning streak at the Masters 1000 level to 18 matches. The Italian, fresh from completing the ‘Sunshine Double’ at Indian Wells and Miami without dropping a set, showed little sign of rust despite returning to clay after nearly a year.

“It was a good performance,” Sinner said. “The first clay event is never easy because you have to adjust your style and approach, but I’m happy with how I played.”

World No.1 Alcaraz followed with an equally assured display, brushing aside Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6–1, 6–3. Although briefly tested in the second set, the Spaniard finished strongly to underline his credentials on his favoured surface.

Sinner, who missed the early part of last year’s clay season, is targeting a first major title on the surface and has closed the gap on Alcaraz in the rankings. The Spaniard admitted that the Italian’s rise to the summit may only be a matter of time.

“I’m likely to lose the No.1 ranking soon,” Alcaraz conceded. “It will be difficult to defend my points, and Jannik is playing at a very high level.”

The rivalry between the pair continues to gather momentum, with memories still fresh of their epic French Open final last year, where Alcaraz edged a five-set marathon despite Sinner holding championship points.
