Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth were the heroes as Atlético Madrid triumphed over a ten-man Barcelona, securing a 2-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Barcelona had pinned Atlético back in their own half when disaster struck just before halftime, leaving Hansi Flick’s side a man down and trailing on the scoreline. Following the dismissal of Pau Cubarsí for bringing down Giuliano Simeone, Álvarez curled in a magnificent free kick to give Atlético the lead. Sørloth then extended their advantage with a second goal twenty minutes from time at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Despite having defeated Atlético in La Liga just days earlier, Barcelona were left lamenting a series of missed opportunities both before and after Cubarsí’s red card. Marcus Rashford came close on multiple occasions but failed to beat Atlético goalkeeper Juan Musso. Lamine Yamal also showed promise, yet his late, intricate run through the Atlético box ultimately ended without reward, as the undermanned Barcelona struggled to regain their footing in the match.
This defeat marked Barcelona’s first loss in 26 home encounters against Atlético since 2006, while Diego Simeone’s side celebrated their first away victory over Spanish opposition in the Champions League.
The second leg is set to take place in Madrid on Tuesday.
