The race for the Owan Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general elections is gathering momentum, as the unwritten zoning agreement favouring Owan East Local government area of Edo state continues to shape political alignments, with key stakeholders throwing their weight behind Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe.
Foremost among the endorsements is that of former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Pally Iriase, who publicly declared support for Umakhihe, citing the need to uphold the long- standing power rotation arrangement between Owan East and Owan West.
Iriase, who spoke at a stakeholders’ meeting , said the decision was in line with the principles of fairness, equity, and mutual respect that underpin the Owan political structure.
He stressed that the constituency must respect its internal understanding to sustain unity.
According to him, “The existing arrangement is clear, and it is only right that Owan East produces the next representative. Dr. Umakhihe has the capacity and experience to deliver quality representation.”
Sources within the political circle also maintained that the growing support for Umakhihe reflects a broader consensus among leaders and grassroots actors who are committed to preserving the zoning formula and avoiding actions that could disrupt political harmony.
A youth leader within the constituency, who spoke under the OYM/NCM platform, said the endorsement by Iriase mirrors the position of the majority of the people.
“This is about justice and balance. The people believe it is Owan East’s turn, and Dr. Umakhihe represents that aspiration,” he said.
Meanwhile, political observers note that the development may reshape the dynamics of the contest, as stakeholders continue to align with the zoning principle, which they describe as critical to maintaining stability and inclusiveness in the constituency’s representation.
