The Ogun State Magistrate’s Court 1 sitting in Sagamu, Sagamu Local Government Area of the State, adjourned the trial of the driver involved in the road crash linked to former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, to June 2, 2026.

The case, presided over by Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, has now been adjourned for about the fourth time, following requests by the prosecution to file a fresh charge to the existing information before the court.

The defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji, was standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving, causing death, reckless and negligent driving, and driving without due care and attention.

He was also accused of causing bodily harm and damage to property, offences said to be contrary to Sections 6(1) and 7(1) of the relevant traffic law. In addition, he was charged with driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.

Ruling on the prosecution’s request for adjournment, Magistrate Somefun granted the application and fixed the next hearing for June 2, 2026, for proper hearing. The request, made by prosecuting counsel, G. O. Ogunyomi, was not opposed by the defence.

Speaking after the proceedings, defence counsel Abiodun Olalekan said the adjournment was necessary to ensure fairness in the trial.

“The development was to ensure justice for all parties involved in the matter,” Olalekan said.

Court records show that the 46-year-old defendant was driving the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025. The accident reportedly claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

The vehicle was said to have collided with a stationary truck, leaving Joshua and the driver with minor injuries. The former world heavyweight champion was later discharged from hospital after being declared clinically fit to continue recovery at home.

The deaths of Ghami and Ayodele sent shockwaves through the international boxing community, where both men were described as key members of Joshua’s training camp.

Their remains were later repatriated to the United Kingdom, where a funeral prayer service was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.
