2026 World Cup’s Teams Get Cash Boost As FIFA Unveils Red Card Crackdown

FIFA has significantly increased financial distributions for the 2026 World Cup, unveiling a near $900 million prize pool while simultaneously introducing stricter disciplinary measures aimed at tackling misconduct, including a new crackdown on players concealing their speech during on-field confrontations.

The governing body confirmed that the total amount to be shared among the 48 participating nations will now rise to $871 million, a notable increase from the $727 million figure initially announced in December. The decision was ratified following a meeting of the FIFA Council ahead of the organisation’s annual Congress held in Vancouver.

The expanded financial package comes amid growing concerns from several member associations regarding the escalating costs associated with competing at the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico. Delegations had warned that expenses linked to travel, taxation, logistics and accommodation could outweigh earnings, particularly for smaller football nations.

In response, FIFA has increased its “preparation costs” grant from $1.5 million to $2.5 million per qualified team. Additionally, the guaranteed participation fee has been raised from $9 million to $10 million. Further financial relief will come through enhanced contributions towards team delegation expenses, as well as expanded ticket allocations for participating nations.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the organisation’s financial strategy, emphasising its commitment to reinvesting revenues back into global football. “FIFA is proud to be in its most solid financial position ever, enabling us to help all our member associations in an unprecedented way,” Infantino stated. “This is one more example of how FIFA’s resources are reinvested back into the game.”

The 2026 edition is projected to generate approximately $13 billion in revenue across the current four-year cycle, making it the most lucrative World Cup in history. The revised prize fund already represents a substantial increase on the financial rewards distributed at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, underlining the commercial expansion of the competition.

However, the financial boost comes at a time when FIFA faces mounting criticism over the affordability of the tournament. Ticket prices have drawn scrutiny from supporters, while some host cities—particularly in the United States—have been accused of sharply increasing public transport costs during the event period.

Alongside the financial announcements, FIFA confirmed new law changes to be implemented at the tournament, which begins in Mexico City on 11 June 2026. Following consultations with the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the sport’s law-making authority, a controversial disciplinary measure has been approved.

Under the new rule, players who cover their mouths while engaging in confrontations with opponents may be shown a red card at the discretion of match officials. The measure is designed to deter abusive language and improve transparency in on-field interactions, particularly in efforts to combat racism and discriminatory behaviour.

The dual announcement reflects FIFA’s attempt to balance financial inclusivity with stronger governance, as it prepares for what is set to be the largest and most commercially ambitious World Cup ever staged.
