Concierge Services Emerge As New Income Stream For Entrepreneurs

A growing number of entrepreneurs in Lagos are tapping into concierge services as a reliable source of income, transforming everyday assistance into a structured and profitable business model.

From airport pickups and hotel reservations to restaurant recommendations and currency exchange guidance, concierge services are quietly becoming a key part of the city’s convenience-driven economy.

The business caters largely to international visitors, business travellers, tourists, expatriates, as well as Nigerians in the diaspora seeking a seamless experience upon arrival.

What sets the trade apart is its flexibility and low entry barrier. For many operators, particularly transport workers, it builds naturally on existing interactions with clients.

Rather than offering a single service, providers bundle multiple solutions, positioning themselves as trusted local guides who can simplify movement and decision-making in a busy city.

For Taiwo Bello, the shift into concierge services evolved from his daily work as an airport taxi driver. What began as routine pickups gradually expanded into a broader service offering.

“I have been working as a taxi man at the airport,” Bello said. “I pick up travellers who often want help finding a good hotel. I take them there, and they pay for the service.”

Beyond direct payments, Bello has built partnerships that boost his earnings. “I have agreements with some hotels. When I bring customers who lodge there, I earn a commission. It adds to my income,” he explained.

This commission-based model is a key feature of the concierge business. Service providers earn not only from clients but also from hotels and other vendors eager to attract customers. For hotels, the arrangement serves as a low-cost marketing strategy that guarantees a steady flow of guests.

A hotel operator confirmed the practice, noting that incentives are offered to drivers who refer customers. “We reward them when they bring guests who stay with us. It encourages them to return with more clients,” the operator said.

Another driver, Kayode Omotola, described the business as both profitable and relationship-driven. According to him, repeat clients are common, especially among frequent visitors who value reliability.

“I have a customer who calls me whenever he is in Nigeria,” Omotola said. “I drive him around and handle his movements. They don’t like stress, so they are willing to pay for convenience.”

Industry observers note that trust, consistency, and local knowledge are critical success factors in the concierge business. Operators who build strong relationships and maintain professionalism are more likely to secure repeat engagements and referrals.

As demand for personalised services continues to grow in Lagos, concierge offerings are expanding beyond basic transportation and accommodation support. Some providers now assist with itinerary planning, shopping, and specialised requests, further increasing earning potential.

Despite its promise, the business also requires coordination, time management, and a strong reputation to thrive. However, for many small-scale entrepreneurs, it presents a practical opportunity to diversify income without significant startup capital.

With Lagos remaining a major hub for commerce and travel, concierge services are expected to gain further traction, offering a new pathway for entrepreneurs to convert everyday interactions into sustainable income.
