Dortmund Defender Süle Announces Retirment From Football At End-of-Season

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Niklas Süle has announced that he will retire from professional football at the conclusion of the current season, ending his playing career at just 30 years old.

The decision came in the wake of a knee injury sustained during last month’s Bundesliga clash with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Süle initially feared he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament for the third time—an injury that had already plagued his career. Although medical tests later revealed no ACL tear, the scare fundamentally shifted his perspective on the game.

Speaking on the Spielmacher podcast on, Süle admitted he was overwhelmed when he first believed the worst. “I went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes,” he said. Even after receiving the reassuring MRI results, his mind was already made up: he could not face another lengthy rehabilitation or the risk of further serious injury.

“In that moment, I really thought: ‘It’s torn,’” Süle recalled. “When I went for the MRI the next day and got the good news [that it wasn’t an ACL tear], it was 1,000% clear to me that it was over.”

He added, “I couldn’t imagine anything worse than actually looking forward to life after football—being independent, going on vacation, spending time with my children—but then having to deal with a third cruciate ligament tear.”

Süle remains under contract with Dortmund until June 30, after which he will officially step away. Over his career, he won five Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and was part of the squad that claimed the 2020 UEFA Champions League. For Germany, he earned 49 caps, played in two World Cups, and lifted the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

His retirement brings an early close to a career that once promised even greater heights but was ultimately shaped by injuries and difficult comebacks.
