Sunderland were cruelly denied a rare victory over Manchester United at the Stadium of Light, as a combination of inspired goalkeeping from Senne Lammens and the frame of the goal kept the hosts at bay on Saturday.
Noah Sadiki squandered Sunderland’s golden opportunity in the opening minutes, with Lammens emerging victorious in their one-on-one encounter. The Belgian stopper continued to frustrate the Black Cats, bravely thwarting Brian Brobbey twice, including a second-half effort.
Brobbey then turned provider in the dying stages, setting up Lutsharel Geertruida, whose powerful shot from the edge of the area cannoned off the foot of the post.
It was a harsh outcome for Sunderland, who faced a much-changed Manchester United side that toiled without veteran midfielder Casemiro. The visitors almost went without a shot on target in a Premier League game for the first time since January 2015, only for Matheus Cunha’s injury-time effort to be saved by Robin Roefs.
A win would have been only Sunderland’s fourth against United in their last 34 Premier League encounters. Manager Regis le Bris might also feel aggrieved that former Sunderland loanee Amad Diallo’s first-half handball in the box went unpunished, with VAR backing the on-pitch decision.
