Brazilian superstar Neymar has revealed he “cried for several hours” after learning he had been selected in Brazil’s squad for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup following his lengthy recovery from a serious knee injury.

The 34-year-old forward, who currently plays for Santos FC, had not represented Brazil since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October 2023.

His prolonged absence raised major doubts over whether he would recover in time to feature at the World Cup.

However, new Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti included Neymar in the final squad, sparking emotional scenes shared by the player on social media.

In a widely circulated video, Neymar was seen embracing his physiotherapist Rafael Martini and fitness coach Ricardo Rosa after hearing his name announced.

Both men played crucial roles in the player’s rehabilitation and return to fitness.

“It’s difficult to explain with words the emotions I’ve felt,” Neymar said while addressing teammates and staff at Santos.

“This call-up wasn’t just for me but for everyone involved in the process. I cried for several hours because it was by no means easy to reach this point.”

The former FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain F.C. forward admitted the recovery process had been physically and emotionally demanding.

“Those who have been with me through it all know that it was difficult and very hard. But after hearing my name on the list, all the sacrifices and effort were worth it,” he added.

Neymar remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals and is now set to appear at his fourth World Cup tournament.

Brazilian supporters celebrated his return to the national team, with many believing his experience and creativity could prove vital as the South Americans pursue a record-extending sixth world title.

The veteran forward thanked fans for standing by him throughout his injury struggles and career.

“Thank you for always believing in me. We’re together as Brazil goes in search of a sixth World Cup title,” he said.

Brazil will face Panama in a friendly match at the iconic Maracanã Stadium on May 31 before travelling to the United States for the World Cup tournament.
