Act Quickly Against Child Marriages To Stop Fistula – First Lady

First lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent action to end child marriage as part of efforts to stop obstetric fistula.

In her message to commemorate the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula yesterday, the first lady said early marriage and early pregnancy remained major causes of obstetric fistula because a young girl’s body is often not fully developed for childbirth.

She also said harmful traditional practices and lack of awareness continue to limit access to skilled care and vital health information.

“This year’s theme, ‘Her Health, Her Right: Shaping a Future without Fistula,’ reminds us that access to quality maternal healthcare is a fundamental right,” she said.

According to Mrs. Tinubu, obstetric fistula is entirely preventable and treatable, and no woman or girl should suffer from the condition.

“We must act urgently to end child marriage, empower girls through education, and ensure every woman has access to quality healthcare,” she stated.

She urged collective action towards building a future where every birth is safe and no woman loses her life in childbirth.
