Legend Golden Care Foundation’s Work In Criminal Justice Reform

Nigeria’s justice system faces persistent challenges, including congestion in correctional facilities, slow judicial processes and limited access to legal representation for indigent detainees.

Amid these challenges, civil society organizations are increasingly stepping forward to support reform initiatives. One of such organizations is Legend Golden Care Foundation, a nonprofit based in Abuja that focuses on criminal justice reform and support for vulnerable communities.

The organization was founded in 2013 by Kanayo Olisa‑Metuh. Initially operating as a humanitarian initiative supporting vulnerable families, LGCF gradually expanded its scope to address systemic justice issues.

The organization’s shift toward justice reform was influenced by its founder’s experiences engaging with correctional facilities and interacting with inmates awaiting trial.

By July 2021, LGCF launched a broader operational strategy centered on legal advocacy, human rights protection and community empowerment.

Today, the organization runs several programs focused on improving access to justice.

Through pro bono legal services, LGCF has handled 1037 cases, assisting individuals facing legal challenges who lack the financial resources to secure representation.

The organization has also supported suspects within police stations, assisting over 200 detainees across three police stations through legal guidance and advocacy.

In addition to legal support, LGCF has delivered more than 2,400 psychosocial support services to victims and vulnerable individuals.

Recognizing the intersection between justice and public health, the organization also conducts sexual and reproductive health rights programs, reaching communities across several Nigerian states.

LGCF’s gender-based violence prevention campaigns have reached over 4,700 individuals through awareness programs and community engagement initiatives. International partnerships have further strengthened the organization’s work.

Through collaboration with the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims, LGCF is implementing several projects focused on torture prevention and survivor rehabilitation in Nigeria.

These initiatives include the EU-funded Support to Sustain and Strengthen Holistic Rehabilitation for Torture Survivors project as well as survivor-Led Peer support program, Socio-Economic Empowerment and Psychosocial Support for Torture Survivors, Promoting Rights to Peaceful Assembly in Nigeria designed to empower individuals who have experienced torture.

With operations now spanning multiple states including Abuja, Anambra, Adamawa, Nassarawa, Bauchi, Borno and Rivers states, LGCF continues to expand its reach across Nigeria.

Observers say organizations like LGCF are helping address critical gaps in Nigeria’s Criminal Justice system while strengthening human rights protection.
