Kano’s Maternal Mortality Drops From 1,025 To 570

The Kano State Government said maternal mortality in the state has declined from 1,025 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2025 to 570, following sustained healthcare interventions and support from development partners.

The Director-General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Prof. Salisu Ibrahim, disclosed this on Friday during the virtual commissioning of the revitalised Gadon Gaya Primary Health Care Centre in Kano.

The project, implemented by the state government with support from the World Bank-backed IMPACT Project, was virtually inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu, while Governor Abba Yusuf was represented by Prof. Ibrahim.

Speaking at the event, Ibrahim attributed the reduction in maternal mortality to joint efforts by the state government, the federal government and development partners.

“It is worth noting that Kano State has really recorded successful strides in improving maternal mortality. As of last year, 2025, maternal mortality rate was 1,025 live births per 100,000 births. As of today, we are speaking about 570, which has actually crashed maternal mortality,” he said.

He explained that the Gadon Gaya facility is one of 187 revitalised primary healthcare centres under the Tinubu administration’s healthcare intervention programme.

According to him, the state has revitalised over 350 primary healthcare facilities through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, the IMPACT Project and other partner interventions, including FCDO Lafiya, UNICEF and GAVI.

Ibrahim added that more than 500 primary healthcare facilities across Kano State have now been renovated, rebuilt or upgraded.

He also noted improvements in immunisation coverage and a reduction in zero-dose children in the state.

The DG commended the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for supporting community mobilisation efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery.

Project manager of the IMPACT Project, Dr Nura Ganduje, said the commissioning of the facility reflects improved access to healthcare services for residents.

He explained that the IMPACT Project, supported by the World Bank and partners, targets reduction of preventable maternal and child deaths through immunisation, malaria control, and strengthened primary healthcare systems.

Ganduje said the Gadon Gaya PHC is among 187 facilities revitalised under the project in Kano State, adding, “We are not just revitalising facilities; we are transforming lives and securing a healthier future for generations to come.”
