Former Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Gombe North, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Usman, has resigned from the party and declared support for the governorship ambition of former minister of communications and digital economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dr. Usman announced his defection at a gathering of supporters, saying the decision followed extensive consultations with his supporters, community leaders and political stakeholders across the Gombe North Senatorial District.

He said his move was inspired by Pantami’s entry into the PDP and his desire to contribute to the development of Gombe State and the country at large.

“This decision is the outcome of extensive consultations with my supporters, community leaders and stakeholders across Gombe North,” he said.

The former senatorial candidate described Pantami as a respected scholar, cybersecurity expert, technologist and a key driver of Nigeria’s digital transformation.

He added that Pantami’s record as minister, particularly in youth empowerment, community development and digital innovation, convinced him that the PDP offers a platform capable of delivering meaningful change in Gombe State.

Dr. Usman expressed appreciation to the Labour Party for the opportunity to contest the 2023 senatorial election, stressing that his exit should not be interpreted as a rejection of the party’s leadership.

Reacting, Alhaji Yusuf Daudu Kaltungo, a key figure in Pantami’s political movement, described the defection as a major boost to the PDP governorship campaign.

He said the development would strengthen the movement and improve its chances ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

Similarly, Isa Muhammad Baba said Dr. Usman’s decision reflected growing confidence in Pantami’s leadership and vision for Gombe State.

Also speaking, Aishatu Sa’idu of the Pantami Social Media Team said support for the former minister cuts across different segments of society due to his record in public service.
