The Kano State Government has approved the merger of the Ministry of Water Resources with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change as part of efforts to enhance administrative efficiency and strengthen coordination in the management of environmental and water-related issues.

The decision, approved by Governor Abba Yusuf, was conveyed in a circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ibrahim.

Under the new arrangement, the ministries will operate as a single entity known as the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change.

According to the SSG, the restructuring is aimed at improving policy coordination, eliminating overlaps in responsibilities and optimising resource utilisation across the two critical sectors.

“The Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the merger of the Ministry of Water Resources and that of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change into a single ministry to be known as the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change,” the circular stated.

It further explained that, to ensure effective service delivery and maintain sectoral focus, the ministry will function through two separate directorates — the Directorate of Water Resources and the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.

“Each directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary, both of whom will report directly to the Commissioner overseeing the ministry.”

The government also directed all departments, agencies and units previously operating under the two ministries to immediately realign their operational structures, reporting channels and official correspondences in line with the new arrangement.

It added that further guidelines on the operational modalities of the newly created ministry would be communicated in due course.
