Ronaldo, Iwobi Take Centre Stage As Nigeria Battle Portugal In High-Profile Friendly

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face one of European football’s powerhouses, Portugal, in a prestigious international friendly on Wednesday evening in Leiria, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Alexander Iwobi expected to be the main attractions in a clash carrying far greater significance than its friendly status suggests.

The encounter at the 29,000-capacity Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa comes with plenty at stake for both teams. Portugal are using the fixture as their final preparation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Nigeria will be eager to maintain the impressive momentum built under head coach Éric Chelle.

Since taking charge 15 months ago, the Franco-Malian tactician has transformed the Super Eagles into a resilient and difficult-to-beat side. Chelle has overseen 24 matches, suffering just one defeat in regulation time – a pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendly against Egypt in December 2025, when he fielded a largely experimental squad.

Portugal manager Roberto Martínez is equally determined to preserve his side’s positive run. The former Belgium coach has guided the Seleção das Quinas through a four-match unbeaten streak, including victories over the United States and Chile and a draw against Mexico. Their last defeat came seven months ago against the Republic of Ireland.

The Portuguese squad boasts an array of world-class talent, led by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo. Martínez also has key stars such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Neves, Rúben Dias, Diogo Dalot, Nélson Semedo, Rafael Leão and João Félix available for selection.

Fernandes arrives in excellent form after scoring and providing an assist in Portugal’s recent victory over Chile in Lisbon.

For Nigeria, the match presents another opportunity to measure progress against elite opposition. Although the Super Eagles will be without attacking stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Chelle still possesses significant firepower.

Samuel Chukwueze has returned to the squad after missing the recent clash with Poland, while experienced winger Moses Simon, alongside strikers Paul Onuachu, Terem Moffi and Akor Adams, offers the Eagles plenty of attacking options. Philip Otele has also impressed in recent outings, including the Unity Cup in London and last week’s encounter in Warsaw.

A major highlight of the evening will be Alexander Iwobi’s landmark 100th appearance for Nigeria. The Fulham midfielder is set to be honoured before kick-off, becoming one of the few players to reach a century of caps for the three-time African champions.

The occasion is expected to provide extra motivation for the influential midfielder as he looks to lead Nigeria’s challenge against Portugal’s star-studded lineup.

Defensively, Chelle has been dealt a setback following the departure of centre-back Igoh Ogbu from camp due to injury. However, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Scotland-based Emmanuel Fernandez are available, while Bruno Onyemaechi and Zaidu Sanusi provide options on the left flank.

Teenage wing-back Abdullahi Bewene, who impressed on his debut against Poland, could be handed another starting role, particularly with Bright Osayi-Samuel unavailable.

In midfield, captain Wilfred Ndidi is expected to partner Iwobi, with Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Tochukwu Nnadi and rising youngster Christian Akpan all competing for places.

Although history favours Portugal, who thrashed Nigeria 4-0 in a friendly in Lisbon in November 2022, Chelle’s rejuvenated Eagles will believe they have the quality and confidence to produce a far more competitive performance this time around.

With World Cup-bound Portugal seeking a final boost before heading into tournament action and Nigeria aiming to underline their resurgence, an entertaining contest appears guaranteed when the two sides meet in Leiria.
