Group A Opener Pits Resurgent Mexico Against Determined South Africa

The 2026 World Cup gets underway today, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in their opening Group A fixture at Estadio Azteca (Mexico City Stadium).

Representing the first of 104 games in total in the expanded 48-team era, this fixture serves as a nostalgic flip of the script from 2010, when Rafael Marquez cancelled out Siphiwe Tshabalala’s iconic opening strike in a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg.

Speaking ahead of the match, South Africa coach Hugo Broos urges discipline, insisting that Bafana Bafana must focus firmly on the present as they prepare to launch their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against the host nation.

Sixteen years ago, South Africa opened their home World Cup against the same opponents in Johannesburg, earning a memorable 1-1 draw courtesy of Siphiwe Tshabalala’s unforgettable strike. This time, however, the tables have turned. Mexico are the hosts, the favourites and the team carrying the weight of expectation, while South Africa arrive as underdogs seeking to upset the script.

Broos is under no illusions about the challenge awaiting his side in one of world football’s most intimidating arenas.

The Belgian tactician has repeatedly stressed the need for discipline, tactical awareness and mental strength if South Africa are to emerge with a positive result from the tournament opener.

“We know what to do against Mexico,” Broos said ahead of the clash. “We know what to do when they have the ball and when we have possession. The final details will be worked on in our next two training sessions. Everything is focused on this game.

“They are all dangerous. They are a very good team with much movement and solidarity. You can see they really want to be world champions.

“You can see that with the way they play. We will have to be at our best level if we want to get a result. It is a very complete team.
