The Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has called on political leaders across Nigeria to govern with integrity, patriotism and commitment to democratic principles as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations.
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Zakari Yau Nadabo, the SDP said June 12 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolising the triumph of the people’s will and their commitment to freedom, justice and good governance.
The party noted that the date occupies a unique place in Nigeria’s political evolution and in the history of the SDP, as the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola contested and won the June 12, 1993 presidential election on the party’s platform.
According to the SDP, the election is still widely regarded as the freest, fairest and most credible in Nigeria’s history.
“As we commemorate this important day, we pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of all heroes of democracy who stood firm in defence of democratic ideals during one of the most challenging periods in Nigeria’s political history,” the statement said.
The party also paid tribute to pro-democracy activists, civil society organisations, journalists and ordinary Nigerians whose efforts contributed to the eventual restoration of democratic governance in the country.
The SDP described June 12 not only as a day of remembrance but also as a moment for national reflection, urging Nigerians to recommit themselves to the principles that inspired the struggle for democracy, including justice, inclusion, accountability, transparency, national unity and respect for the will of the people.
It stressed that the spirit of June 12 can only be sustained through strong democratic institutions, credible elections, protection of citizens’ rights and responsive governance that meets the aspirations of the people.
“As the political platform that produced the symbol of the June 12 mandate, the SDP reaffirms its commitment to promoting democratic values, national development, social justice and the welfare of all Nigerians,” the party stated.
The opposition party further urged Nigerians to continue participating actively and peacefully in the democratic process while calling on leaders at all levels to prioritise good governance and the national interest.
The SDP expressed hope for a Nigeria where justice prevails, opportunities abound and every citizen’s voice counts.
It also wished Nigerians a peaceful and meaningful Democracy Day celebration.
