Australia made the perfect start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an assured 2-0 victory over Türkiye in their Group D opener, delivering a composed and clinical performance to claim all three points.

The Socceroos struck in each half to secure a deserved win, with teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda setting them on their way before Connor Metcalfe sealed the result late on in a match that showcased Australia’s growing confidence on football’s biggest stage.

Australia dominated the early exchanges and were rewarded in the 27th minute when Irankunda broke the deadlock. The talented forward finished off a well-worked move, assisted by Paul Okon-Engstler, to give the Socceroos a 1-0 lead and send their supporters into celebration.

Türkiye attempted to respond before the break, but Australia’s disciplined defensive unit stood firm to take their advantage into half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Türkiye enjoying periods of possession but struggling to create clear-cut opportunities against a well-organised Australian side. As the contest entered its closing stages, Metcalfe delivered the decisive blow in the 75th minute, calmly finding the net to double Australia’s lead and effectively put the result beyond doubt.

Türkiye’s frustrations were summed up late in the match when Yunus Akgün was booked in the 86th minute as their hopes of a comeback faded.

The final whistle confirmed a comfortable 2-0 victory for Australia, who now sit in a strong position in Group D after the opening round of fixtures.

The result provides a significant boost to the Socceroos’ hopes of reaching the knockout stages, while Türkiye are left with work to do in their remaining group matches if they are to keep their World Cup dream alive.
