Iran Coach Hits Out At World Cup Travel Chaos After New Zealand Draw

Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei has criticised what he described as the unfair treatment of his team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, claiming they are the “most oppressed team” at the tournament following a series of logistical difficulties.

The outspoken remarks came after Iran’s 2-2 draw with New Zealand in Los Angeles, where the coach revealed his squad had been unexpectedly ordered to return immediately to their training base in Mexico after the match.

Iran arrived at the tournament amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Washington. Several members of the team’s support staff reportedly struggled to obtain visas, while players received travel clearance only shortly before departure.

The team had originally planned to establish a base in Arizona but were forced to relocate to Tijuana in Mexico because of visa complications.

“They delayed our arrivals and now they are forcing us to go back early without adequate recovery time,” Ghalenoei said. “They keep creating more obstacles, but we will not allow that to affect our commitment.”

The coach explained that his players had initially been informed they could remain in the United States until Tuesday afternoon before being instructed to leave earlier than expected.

Ghalenoei also revealed that several technical staff members had been required to perform administrative duties because key personnel were unable to travel.

Star striker Mehdi Taremi echoed his manager’s frustrations, describing the team’s experience as a “disaster”.

“It has created a lot of stress for the players and staff,” Taremi said. “We need more support because these issues are affecting our preparations.”

The forward added that FIFA president Gianni Infantino had visited the dressing room to discuss the situation, although broader challenges remain unresolved.

Despite the difficulties, Iran remain determined to compete strongly as they pursue qualification for the knockout stages.
