DR Congo marked their return to the FIFA World Cup with a spirited performance, holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their Group K opener and frustrating Cristiano Ronaldo’s side in a hard-fought contest.

The African nation showed resilience and determination to earn a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites, leaving Portugal with work to do in what is shaping up to be a competitive group.

Portugal made the brighter start and took the lead after just 13 minutes. Midfielder João Neves finished off a well-worked move, converting a pass from Pedro Neto to put Roberto Martínez’s men ahead.

The early goal appeared to settle the Europeans, who enjoyed long spells of possession and looked poised to extend their advantage. However, DR Congo gradually grew into the contest and began to threaten on the counter-attack.

Defender Chancel Mbemba, one of the Leopards’ standout performers, marshalled the back line superbly and helped keep Portugal’s attacking stars at bay. Ronaldo, making yet another World Cup appearance, found opportunities limited as the Congolese defence remained disciplined and organised.

The turning point arrived deep into first-half stoppage time. Arthur Masuaku delivered a dangerous ball into the area and Yoane Wissa reacted quickest, firing home in the fifth minute of added time to level the scores and spark celebrations among the DR Congo supporters.

The equaliser transformed the mood of the match and ensured the teams went into the interval locked at 1-1.

Portugal pushed hard for a winner after the break, with Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva attempting to unlock the Congolese defence, but clear-cut chances proved difficult to come by. DR Congo remained compact and dangerous on the break, showing little sign of being overawed by their illustrious opponents.

As frustration mounted for Portugal, late yellow cards for Nélson Semedo and Tomás Araújo reflected their growing desperation to find a decisive goal.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable result for DR Congo, who secured a point on their return to football’s biggest stage and demonstrated they are capable of competing with the world’s elite.

For Portugal, meanwhile, the draw represents a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign. While they remain among the favourites to progress from Group K, Martínez’s side will know significant improvement is required in their remaining fixtures.

For DR Congo, this was more than a point—it was a statement of intent.
