The Borno State Police Command has intercepted a large consignment of illicit drugs concealed in 55 sacks and arrested a suspect allegedly transporting the substances to a border community for onward smuggling out of Nigeria.

The Command said the seizure was made along the Baga Road bypass in Maiduguri following an intelligence-led operation by its X-Squad operatives.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Kenneth Nahum Daso, said the operation was part of the command’s sustained crackdown on the trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs and other prohibited substances under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid.

According to Daso, “On 26th June, 2026, at about 1911hrs, operatives of the Command’s X-Squad, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted an Isuzu Bedford pick-up vehicle along Baga Road-Bypass, Maiduguri.”

He said a thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 55 sacks containing numerous 60ml bottles of an illicit substance popularly known as “Gumm.”

Daso said preliminary investigations indicated that the consignment was being transported to Ngamboru Ngala Local Government Area, from where it was intended to be smuggled across Nigeria’s international border.

The police spokesman said the driver of the vehicle, 51-year-old Babagana Modu, was arrested during the operation.

According to him, the suspect told investigators that he had been contracted to transport the illicit consignment to its destination.

Daso said efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest other members of the trafficking network who remain at large.

He added that the case was still under active investigation and that additional details would be made public as investigations progressed.

The police spokesman reaffirmed the command’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and tackling other criminal activities across the state.

“The Borno State Police Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities across the state.

“The Command urges members of the public to continue supporting the Police with timely and credible information to preempt crime,” he said.
