The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will kick off on 27–29 August, following a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja involving the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), NPFL organisers and club owners.

The approved football calendar will see the campaign run until 28 May 2027, with fixtures carefully aligned to accommodate the President Federation Cup in a move aimed at creating a more structured, predictable and professionally managed domestic football calendar.

The biggest announcement from the meeting, however, came from NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, who revealed that the winners of the 2026/27 NPFL title will receive a record-breaking ₦1 billion in prize money—the largest championship purse ever offered in Nigerian club football.

The landmark financial reward forms part of an ambitious reform agenda designed to improve the league’s commercial appeal, increase competitiveness and attract greater investment into Nigerian football.

“We are committed to transforming the NPFL into a truly professional and financially viable league,” Dikko said.

“This prize money reflects our ambition to reward excellence and attract the kind of investment that will propel Nigerian football to new heights.”

The new campaign will also welcome four promoted clubs from the Nigeria National League (NNL). Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees and Doma United secured promotion after impressive performances in the 2025/26 second-tier season and will replace the four relegated teams from the outgoing NPFL campaign.

Awaiting the newcomers are defending champions Enugu Rangers, who claimed their ninth league title after finishing top of the table in the 2025/26 season. The Flying Antelopes will begin the new campaign aiming to retain their crown and secure a historic 10th NPFL title.

Stakeholders believe the combination of a record prize fund, a well-defined football calendar and the arrival of ambitious newly promoted clubs will significantly enhance the quality and competitiveness of the league.

The reforms are also expected to strengthen the NPFL’s standing among Africa’s leading domestic competitions by improving financial sustainability and providing greater certainty for clubs, sponsors and supporters.

In addition, the calendar has been synchronised more effectively with continental competitions, allowing Nigerian representatives in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup to better balance their domestic and international commitments.

With the new season just weeks away, clubs are expected to intensify their pre-season preparations as transfer activity gathers pace across the country.

The prospect of a historic ₦1 billion prize for the league champions is set to add another layer of intrigue to the title race, raising expectations for what could become the most competitive, commercially rewarding and widely followed season in NPFL history.
