Luka Modric has finalised plans to extend his stay at AC Milan through the 2026-27 season while simultaneously preparing to end his international career with Croatia this fall, according to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 40-year-old midfielder, currently on holiday, has signaled his intent to Milan’s leadership and is expected to sign the new deal imminently.
He will join the squad for their pre-season tour in Australia under manager Ruben Amorim, with an official announcement anticipated within days.
On the international front, Modric has informed Croatia coach Slaven Bilic that he will step away from the national team after a Nations League match against Spain on October 6 in Split.
The decision follows Croatia’s round-of-32 exit at the World Cup to Portugal, and allows Modric to conserve energy for a final campaign focused on securing silverware with Milan.
Modric joined Milan on a free transfer in 2025 after a decorated spell at Real Madrid, where he won six Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles, and five UEFA Super Cups.
He also claimed the Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA Men’s Player award in 2018.
His career includes prior moves from Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham for €22.5 million in 2008, and later to Real Madrid for €35 million in 2012, plus three Croatian league titles.
