Akwa Ibom Pushes for Stronger Parenting Support as Experts Back Radio’s Role in Raising Happier, Safer Families

Family wellbeing took centre stage in Uyo recently, as government officials, academics, child protection advocates, media professionals and civil society groups gathered to push for greater investment in parenting support across Akwa Ibom State.

The workshop, themed around using evidence, media and partnerships to strengthen families, was organised by Parenting for Lifelong Health and Oxford University’s Global Parenting Initiative, with backing from the John Fell Fund. It brought together voices from government, universities, healthcare, education, faith groups and the media to review an independent evaluation of the radio programme Parenting 101 with Isang.

Dr Isang Awah, the initiative’s Head of Advocacy, explained the show was designed to make solid, practical parenting advice easily accessible over the airwaves — because, as she put it, supported parents raise thriving children and build safer, stronger communities.

Findings from Dr Nsikanabasi Wilson of the University of Uyo showed real progress: parents reported greater confidence. They had picked up more positive parenting habits, though there’s clearly room to reach even more families across the state.

State officials reaffirmed their commitment to child well-being, while media representatives spoke to the radio’s power to drive social change. Participants also explored ways to expand support through schools, churches and community networks, and to link parenting programmes more closely with health, education and welfare services.

The takeaway was clear: sustained funding, joined-up thinking across sectors, and stronger leadership are essential if Akwa Ibom’s children are to grow up safe, supported and nurtured, and stakeholders left pledging to keep pushing that effort forward.
