Super Falcons Eye Historic 11th Crown As 2026 WAFCON Kicks Off

As the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations kicks off this Sunday(Today), Nigeria’s Super Falcons stand on the precipice of history. The continent’s most decorated women’s football team enter the tournament with a record 10 titles to their name, and now they set their sights on an unprecedented 11th crown. The rest of Africa is chasing them, but the defending champions carry the weight of expectation and the DNA of winners as they begin their campaign in Morocco.

That championship DNA was on full display in the 2024 final, when the Falcons staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2, with Jennifer Echegini netting the dramatic late winner. That never-say-die spirit remains the team’s greatest psychological weapon, and the core of that victorious squad has been preserved. Over 75 percent of the players from that historic triumph return to defend their title, ensuring continuity and a winning mentality that few sides in African football can match.

Head coach Justine Madugu has assembled a 25-player squad that masterfully blends seasoned veterans with emerging talent. The spine of the team is built on world-class individuals: Chiamaka Nnadozie, widely regarded as the continent’s finest goalkeeper; six-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala; and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, the Most Valuable Player of the previous tournament.

Veteran defender Osinachi Ohale, seeking her sixth WAFCON title, provides additional steel and experience. This core gives Nigeria an unmatched edge in high-pressure encounters.

Yet the path to an 11th title is fraught with obstacles. The Falcons have been drawn into a challenging Group C alongside a formidable Zambia, an organised Egypt, and tournament debutants Malawi. Zambia, in particular, poses a significant threat with a star-studded attack featuring record-breaking forward Racheal Kundananji and consistent goal-scorer Barbra Banda. Nigeria will need to be at their sharpest from the opening whistle to navigate this group and build the momentum required for a deep run.

Compounding the challenge is the notable absence of key defender Ashleigh Plumptre, sidelined through injury. Her defensive solidity and experience will be missed, but the setback has opened the door for new faces. Home-based goalkeeper Fatima Oloko and returning forward Gift Monday are among those eager to seize their opportunity. The performance of these newcomers could prove decisive in determining how far the Falcons can go in their quest for glory.

The stakes in this tournament extend far beyond continental pride. The semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, a stated primary objective for Madugu. With a record $2 million first prize also on the line, the pressure and motivation are immense. Nigeria’s dominance is undeniable – only Equatorial Guinea (twice) and South Africa (once) have ever broken their stranglehold on the WAFCON title. Every team will raise their game against the champions, and complacency is simply not an option.

Ultimately, the Super Falcons possess the experience, talent, and unshakeable belief to go all the way. If they can manage the weight of expectation, and navigate a tricky group stage, there is every reason to believe they will be lifting the trophy once more. Their journey to an 11th crown begins on Tuesday, and with it, the chance to cement their legacy as the undisputed queens of African football for generations to come.
