Team Nigeria will launch another major assault for medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, with a strong line-up of athletes set to compete across track, field and para-athletics events.

Nigeria’s athletics contingent enters the day buoyed by the impressive performances of Tuesday, when Temitope Simbiat Adeshina won bronze in the women’s high jump and Kanyinsola Ajayi claimed bronze in the men’s 100 metres.

With several of the country’s leading medal hopefuls in action today, Team Nigeria will be targeting a substantial medal harvest as its athletics campaign gathers momentum in Glasgow.

The day’s programme begins at 10:30am with the women’s 200 metres first round, where Jennifer Obi Chukwuka and Olayinka Olajide will seek places in the next round.

Chukwuka will compete in Heat Four from lane three, while Olajide, who has a season’s best of 23.14 seconds, lines up in Heat Five from lane five.

Attention will then turn to the field at 11:05am, when Nigerian captain Chukwuebuka Enekwechi begins his men’s shot put campaign.

The Commonwealth Games medal hopeful will compete in Group B and throw sixth in the order, carrying a season’s best of 21.74 metres. Enekwechi will be aiming to produce a mark good enough to secure qualification for the final and keep his medal ambitions alive.

Nigeria’s sprinters return to the track at 11:32am for the men’s 200 metres first round.

Alaba Akintola will line up in Heat Two from lane five, while Udodi Onwuzurike will compete in Heat Five, also from lane five.

Onwuzurike comes into the competition with a season’s best of 20.18 seconds, while Akintola has clocked 20.33 seconds this season.

The evening session could bring Nigeria’s biggest opportunities for medals, beginning at 7:00pm with the women’s F42/44 discus throw final.

Goodness Nwachukwu and Destiny Agbo will both be chasing podium finishes, with Nwachukwu entering the event with a season’s best of 36.56 metres and Agbo boasting a best of 31.84 metres.

Another major Nigerian medal hope comes at 7:33pm when African record holder Ezekiel Nathaniel begins his men’s 400 metres hurdles campaign.

Nathaniel, drawn in lane seven of Heat Two, owns a season’s best of 47.37 seconds and will be expected to negotiate the opening round successfully as he begins his pursuit of Commonwealth Games glory.

At 8:01pm, Jessica Oji will represent Nigeria in the women’s shot put final.

The 19-year-old has produced a season’s best of 18.50 metres and will throw seventh in the order as she looks to challenge for a place on the podium.

Nigeria’s busy athletics programme concludes at 9:12pm with the men’s T47 100 metres final, where Ifeanyi Christain will compete from lane two with another opportunity to add to the country’s growing medal tally.

Wednesday’s action comes after an encouraging Tuesday for Team Nigeria.

Adeshina secured bronze in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.90m, finishing behind Australia’s Eleanor Patterson, who won gold with 1.96m, and silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers.

Ajayi also produced a memorable performance in the men’s 100m final, clocking 9.90 seconds to claim bronze behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy.

Eseme stole the headlines by winning gold in a Commonwealth Games record of 9.83 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 9.86 seconds set by Trinidad and Tobago’s Ato Boldon in 1998.

Nigeria’s Oyesade Olatoye also finished eighth in the women’s hammer throw final with a best effort of 63.27m, while boxer Patricia Mbata narrowly missed out on a medal after losing 3-2 to England’s Mary Kate Smith in the women’s 75kg quarter-finals.

With Enekwechi, Nathaniel, Nwachukwu, Agbo, Oji and Christain all in action, Nigeria will be hoping Wednesday produces an even bigger return.

The athletics contingent has already demonstrated its medal potential in Glasgow, and with a packed schedule of track and field events today, Team Nigeria will be looking to turn that momentum into a significant medal harvest.
