Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered another golden moment for Team Nigeria at the ongoing Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, winning the men’s shot put title to take the country’s gold medal haul to eight.

The Nigerian record holder produced a superb throw of 21.07 metres in a tightly contested final to defeat New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who settled for silver after recording 21.03m. England’s Scott Lincoln completed the podium with a bronze-winning effort of 20.99m.

The thrilling contest was decided by the narrowest of margins, with only four centimetres separating Enekwechi from Walsh in a dramatic battle for gold.

South Africa’s Aiden Smith finished fourth with 20.31m, while India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor and New Zealand’s Nick Palmer occupied fifth and sixth positions respectively after both recorded 20.27m.

The victory marked a significant milestone in Enekwechi’s illustrious career, as he finally added a Commonwealth Games gold medal to a growing list of achievements that includes African titles, Olympic and World Championships appearances, and becoming the first Nigerian to surpass the 22-metre mark in the shot put.

His Glasgow triumph further underlined Nigeria’s impressive dominance in throwing events at the Games.

Earlier in the competition, Jessica Oji secured a historic silver medal in the women’s shot put, while Goodness Nwachukwu produced a world-record performance to win gold in para athletics.

Enekwechi’s success also boosted Team Nigeria’s position on the overall medals table, taking the country’s tally to 15 medals comprising eight gold, five silver and two bronze, with more athletics finals still ahead.
