First Lady Raises Alarm Over Online Scams Fueling Human Trafficking

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has raised concern over the growing use of online scams to facilitate human trafficking, calling for increased public awareness, stronger law enforcement and greater support for victims of the crime.

In her message to mark the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on Thursday, the First Lady said this year’s theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” underscores the evolving nature of human trafficking, with criminals increasingly exploiting digital platforms to lure victims into forced criminality and other forms of exploitation.

She described human trafficking as a modern-day form of slavery and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to joining the global community in ending the crime in all its forms while protecting the dignity, freedom and rights of every individual.

According to her, the theme highlights the need to intensify public awareness, strengthen preventive measures, enforce existing laws and provide adequate support for survivors of human trafficking.

The First Lady urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and work together to protect vulnerable persons from exploitation.

“Let us remain vigilant, protect the vulnerable, and ensure that no one falls victim of exploitation. Through collective action, we can build a safer society where every person can live in freedom, dignity, and hope,” she said.

Senator Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s resolve to combat human trafficking, declaring, “We say ‘No’ to human trafficking today.”

The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed annually on July 30 to raise awareness about human trafficking and promote efforts to prevent the crime and protect its victims.
