Calls Grow To Ban Meta AI Glasses Over Privacy Concerns

Privacy advocates and regulators in Germany have intensified calls for a ban on Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses, warning that the devices pose serious risks to consumers by enabling covert recording and fueling digital abuse.

The renewed concerns come after German digital rights organisation HateAid revealed that police in the city of Potsdam had received complaints from young women who alleged they were secretly filmed by male strangers using Meta Glasses at a public swimming pool.

Germany has some of the world’s strictest privacy laws, with photographing or filming individuals without their consent generally prohibited. However, HateAid warned that enforcing such laws has become increasingly difficult because the burden of proof often falls on victims, while recordings made with smart glasses are far less noticeable than those captured with smartphones.

“This technology is fueling digital violence, as perpetrators now need virtually no technical know-how,” HateAid said.

The organisation argued that the discreet nature of the wearable devices makes it easier for offenders to record unsuspecting individuals without detection, raising concerns over privacy and public safety.

Adding to the growing criticism, Thomas Fuchs, Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, said an outright ban on smart glasses could be considered.

Speaking to German broadcaster ARD, Fuchs disclosed that his office had tested the Meta Glasses and found that the LED indicator designed to notify people when recording is taking place was too dim to be visible under normal daylight conditions.

He said the findings raised serious questions about whether the devices provide sufficient transparency for members of the public.

Fuchs also revealed that discussions were underway with regulatory counterparts in Ireland, where Meta’s European headquarters is located, to explore possible European Union-wide policy measures on the use of the technology.

The growing scrutiny reflects wider concerns among privacy advocates and regulators over the rapid adoption of AI-powered wearable devices, with critics warning that existing laws may not adequately address the privacy challenges posed by emerging technologies.
