FCTA To Build More Bus,Taxi Terminals, Move Against Illegal Motor Parks

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced plans to construct additional modern bus and taxi terminals across Abuja as part of efforts to eliminate illegal motor parks, improve passenger safety and modernise the nation’s capital.

The mandate secretary of the FCT Transportation Secretariat, Mr. Chinedum Elechi, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists in Abuja on the operationalisation of the newly completed Mabushi and Central Business District (CBD) bus and taxi terminals.

Elechi said the FCTA, under the leadership of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, remains committed to transforming Abuja into a world-class city through sustained investment in modern transportation infrastructure.

He explained that the administration’s decision to phase out informal loading points such as Berger and Area 1 roundabouts was aimed at enhancing security, restoring order and improving the efficiency of public transportation.

According to him, the terminals in Mabushi and Kugbo are dedicated to intercity transportation, providing passengers travelling to destinations such as Aba, Lokoja, Owerri and Sokoto with a safe, secure and comfortable boarding environment.

“You cannot guarantee what happens when people board vehicles at illegal loading points. Such ad-hoc arrangements have contributed significantly to the ‘one chance’ security challenges we experience today,” he said.

Elechi stated that while the first phase of the project covers the Mabushi, Kugbo and Central Business District terminals, additional terminals have already been captured in the FCTA’s expansion plans and will be delivered through future budgetary provisions.

He noted that the Central Business District terminal was designed primarily to serve intracity transportation, while the other terminals would cater to long-distance travellers.

Drawing comparisons with successful urban renewal initiatives elsewhere, Elechi said Abuja must emulate cities that have replaced chaotic transit points with organised transport hubs.

“I have travelled across the world, and even within Nigeria, cities are tidying up their transport systems. If Lagos could transform the former chaos at Oshodi into modern transport hubs, there is no reason Abuja should not achieve the same,” he said.

The mandate secretary explained that the terminals would serve as primary transport hubs connected to structured last-mile services through designated bus shelters, taxis and e-hailing platforms.

“We cannot build a bus terminal in every neighbourhood, just as we cannot build an airport everywhere. These terminals are central hubs where passengers begin or end their journeys.

“When travellers return from long-distance trips, the last-mile transport system will ensure they are safely conveyed to their final destinations through buses, taxis or private pick-ups,” he added.

Elechi appealed to transport operators and commuters to embrace the new facilities, assuring residents that the initiative was designed to improve public safety, maintain a cleaner city environment and establish a more efficient, reliable and organised public transport system across the Federal Capital Territory.
