AI Race: Gemini Surges To 1bn Monthly Users

Google’s artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini, has surpassed one billion monthly active users, as the company pushes to compete with OpenAI and other technology companies for dominance of the rapidly expanding generative AI market.

Google CEO, Sundar Pichai disclosed this, saying the Gemini app had crossed the one-billion-user mark. The figure represents an increase from the 950 million monthly users reported by Google in July and highlights the rapid adoption of AI assistants for work, communication, information search and everyday tasks.

This places Gemini among Google’s major billion-user products, including Search, Gmail, Android, Maps, Chrome and YouTube. However, the figure refers specifically to the Gemini app and web experience, rather than users accessing Gemini-powered features embedded across Google’s wider product ecosystem.

Google said the Gemini app is increasingly being used for a broad range of activities, reflecting a shift in how consumers interact with artificial intelligence.  According to TechCrunch, 63 per cent of Gemini users interact with the assistant through voice, while the platform is also being used for image generation, screen sharing and camera-based interactions.

Gemini’s rapid expansion has strengthened Google’s position in an increasingly competitive AI market involving OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic. The milestone also puts Gemini in the same broad user-scale territory as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has also surpassed one billion monthly users, according to the company.

Gemini’s growth has accelerated sharply over the past year. Google reported about 400 million monthly active users in May 2025, with the figure rising to 750 million by the end of that year and reaching 900 million by May 2026 before climbing to 950 million in July.

The expansion reflects Google’s strategy of integrating its Gemini models across its broader ecosystem while continuing to develop the standalone assistant. The company has been embedding AI capabilities into products ranging from Search and Workspace to Android, giving Gemini access to a vast existing user base.

The growth of Gemini also highlights the increasing mainstream adoption of generative AI. Rather than being limited to specialised technology users, AI assistants are increasingly being used for writing, research, learning, image creation, planning, coding and other everyday activities.

Meanwhile, the rapid growth brings a new challenge for Google in converting massive user adoption into sustained engagement and revenue while maintaining the quality and reliability of its AI systems.

The company is also competing against OpenAI, whose ChatGPT has established a strong position in the consumer and enterprise AI markets. The billion-user milestones recorded by the leading AI assistants indicate that generative AI is moving beyond an emerging technology into a mass-market digital service.

As competition among AI companies intensifies, the battle is increasingly shifting from simply building more capable AI models to controlling the platforms, devices, search services and productivity tools through which users interact with AI.

Google’s extensive ecosystem gives Gemini a significant distribution advantage, particularly through Android, Search and other widely used services. The company can therefore integrate AI into products already used by billions of people rather than relying solely on a standalone application to attract users.

For Google, the challenge will be to maintain Gemini’s rapid growth while turning its expanding user base into a sustainable business. This will depend on continued improvements in AI capabilities, reliability and user experience, as well as the company’s ability to develop commercial applications around the technology.

However, the one-billion-user milestone represents more than a growth statistic for Google, as it signals the accelerating mainstream adoption of artificial intelligence and raises the stakes in the battle among technology companies to determine which platforms will shape how consumers and businesses interact with AI.
