A video showing Maryam Wadada, wife of Nasarawa politician Senator Aliyu Wadada, distributing cash to residents in the state has gone viral, triggering heated reactions and questions about political cash handouts ahead of the 2027 elections.

In the footage circulating on social media, Maryam Wadada is seen handing cash to members of the public, with the scene attracting significant attention from users on X.

The video has prompted some Nigerians to question the purpose and timing of the cash distribution, particularly given the increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Some X users have called the attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the footage, asking whether such public cash distributions should be investigated to determine whether they constitute legitimate assistance or could amount to voter inducement.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over the use of money, gifts and other material benefits to influence voters during Nigeria’s electoral cycle.

While cash distribution can form part of legitimate empowerment or humanitarian programmes, the circumstances surrounding such interventions, including who is distributing the money, the beneficiaries, the source of the funds and the timing, can become particularly sensitive when the individuals involved have close political affiliations.

However, the viral video involving his wife has generated a different conversation online, with some Nigerians asking whether public cash distributions by politically connected individuals should automatically attract closer scrutiny from electoral and anti-corruption agencies.

The footage alone does not establish that the money was distributed for the purpose of influencing voters, nor does it prove that any law was violated.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from INEC or the EFCC regarding the video.

The development has nevertheless reignited the debate over political giving in Nigeria and where the line should be drawn between genuine empowerment, philanthropy and activities that could potentially influence electoral choices.

With the video continuing to circulate, Nigerians are now waiting to see whether the relevant authorities will take note of the incident or provide clarification on the legality of such cash distributions.
