Puerto Rican Boxer Prichard Colón Dies at 33 After 2015 Brain Injury
Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colón, who suffered a catastrophic brain injury during a professional bout in 2015, has died at the age of 33.
Colón collapsed in his dressing room after his light-middleweight fight against Terrell Williams in Fairfax, Virginia, in October 2015. During the contest, he repeatedly complained about illegal punches to the back of his head.
He was subsequently diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage and underwent surgery to relieve pressure and swelling. Colón remained in a coma for 221 days before spending the rest of his life in a vegetative state and requiring round-the-clock care.
His father, Richard, confirmed his death.
The fight against Williams was surrounded by controversy. Williams was deducted a point for illegal punches, while Colón was later penalised for a low blow and knocked down in the ninth round.
In a further unfortunate turn of events, Colón’s corner mistakenly removed his gloves believing the bout had ended. The action resulted in the Puerto Rican being disqualified.
Colón’s parents later filed a lawsuit seeking more than $50 million in damages against the ringside doctor and the promoters of the fight. The case remains unresolved.
Born in Puerto Rico, Colón enjoyed an impressive amateur career, becoming a national champion in two weight divisions and winning gold at the 2010 Pan American Youth Championship.
He turned professional in 2013 after failing to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games and quickly built an unbeaten record.
Colón retired from boxing with a 16-0 professional record, including 13 victories by knockout.
Tributes have since poured in for the former prospect, with the World Boxing Association describing him as “a true warrior”.
The World Boxing Council named Colón an honorary champion in 2021 in recognition of his courage and his place in the sport.
Colón is survived by his parents, Richard and Nieves, who remained closely involved in his care throughout the years following his injury.
