Aderemi Storms To 50.95s As Teenager Make Huge 400m Breakthrough 

Seventeen-year-old Nigerian quarter-miler Iyanuoluwa Aderemi produced a stunning improvement at the third edition of the Dynamic Athletics Meet 2026, underlining her rapid development in the women’s 400m.

Competing at the Yaba Tech Sports Complex in Lagos on Saturday, Aderemi clocked 50.95 seconds to win her heat, taking almost a full second off her previous personal best of 51.86s set at the National Trials on 21 June.

Her 0.91-second improvement in less than two months represents a significant breakthrough for the emerging athlete and has placed her firmly among Nigeria’s promising young quarter-milers.

The performance also caught the attention of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Second Vice-President, Akuchukwu Aghazu, who expressed his admiration for the teenager’s rapid progress.

“This would have won gold in Oregon, almost a second off her time in three months? Wow,” Aghazu said.

Aderemi finished ahead of Esther Peter Okon, who clocked 51.52s, while Onyinyechi Success Onu was third in 54.31s.

Oluchi Ezeh finished fourth in 55.11s, followed by Joseph Joy Ayomide in 55.57s, Ayi Blessing Sekibo in 55.79s and Ufuoma Merit in 57.63s. Faith Ezechukwu did not start.

Aderemi’s progress draws comparisons with the development of former Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili, who, at 16, improved her 400m time from 52.28s in April 2019 to 51.68s at the African Games in Rabat, Morocco, in August of the same year.

The Dynamic Athletics Meet also attracted significant support from former athletes and sports stakeholders, with financial incentives offered across several events.

Former Nigerian sprinter Olusoji Fasuba and Endurance Ojokolo each provided ₦200,000 for the 100m events.

In the 400m, Princess Mabel Madojiemu provided ₦200,000, while former Olympic medallist Enefiok Udo-Obong personally offered ₦500,000 each for the men’s and women’s winners, subject to performance conditions.

To qualify for Udo-Obong’s incentive, the men’s winner must run 45.50s or faster, while the women’s winner must record 50.80s or faster. The money is being provided personally by Udo-Obong and is not held by Dynamic Athletics.

The 800m events also received ₦200,000 from former athlete and Caligeo Suites chief executive, Gbolahan Fatuga, to be shared between the men’s and women’s races. Winners in each category receive ₦50,000, with ₦30,000 for second place and ₦20,000 for third.

Coach Felix Onoriode provided a further ₦40,000 for the U-11 and U-15 100m winners, with ₦10,000 allocated to each of the four winning categories.

Fatuga said the financial incentives had provided additional motivation for athletes competing at the meet.

Reacting to Aderemi’s performance, he said: “Perhaps inspired by the ₦1 million that another former quarter-miler had on the table for sub-50… She was so close.”

Aderemi’s latest run marks a remarkable progression from 51.86s in June to 50.95s on 15 August. The teenager has now broken into the 50-second range and is emerging as one of the most exciting prospects in Nigeria’s women’s 400m programme.

Her performance at the Dynamic Athletics Meet offered further evidence of her rapid development and the growing potential of Nigeria’s next generation of quarter-milers.
