Malawi and Cameroon will contest the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday(Today), at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium, with both nations seeking their first-ever continental title in a match that pits the tournament’s most potent attack against its sturdiest defence.

Malawi, competing in their debut WAFCON appearance, have emerged as the tournament’s surprise package after stunning ten-time champions Nigeria 3-2 in their opening group match. The Scorchers have since powered past Algeria in the semi-finals, driven by the prolific scoring of sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, who have combined for nine goals between them.

Temwa Chawinga currently leads the Golden Boot race with five goals, while captain Tabitha has netted four, including a decisive brace in the semi-final victory. Their pace and clinical finishing have made Malawi the tournament’s highest-scoring side, presenting a formidable challenge for any opposition.
Cameroon, however, arrive in the final with a defensive record that has become the tournament’s talking point. Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina has not conceded a goal in over 360 minutes of play, producing match-winning performances against Nigeria and hosts Morocco, where she saved a penalty in extra time and denied three spot-kicks in the semi-final shootout.

The Indomitable Lionesses’ journey has been unconventional, having initially failed to qualify before benefiting from CAF’s expansion to 16 teams.

They have capitalised on that reprieve with a disciplined, counter-attacking approach, reaching their fourth final after three previous runner-up finishes.

The final represents a generational clash between Cameroon’s experienced core and Malawi’s fearless debutants.
