Logistics Crisis Delays Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament As 483 Athletes Await Action

The 5th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament in Abuja has suffered a one-day delay after logistics challenges and issues surrounding the use of the Velodrome at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium forced organisers to adjust the competition schedule.

The championship, which was originally scheduled to officially begin on Thursday, August 20, will now get underway on Friday, August 21, 2026, according to the Technical Director of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), Mr Dave Jegede.

Jegede explained that while the tournament’s competitive events could not commence as planned, officials had used the available time to conduct referees’ and coaches’ courses and examinations, while athletes completed their mandatory weigh-ins ahead of the draws.

“Referees and coaches’ courses and examinations have started and the athletes are doing their weigh-in, and the draw will be held any moment from now. The competition proper will start tomorrow morning,” Jegede said.

The technical director attributed the postponement to logistical difficulties involving the Velodrome, which he said had recently been privatised, as well as problems with electricity supply at the facility.

“The competition was supposed to start today with individual kata elimination and finals, but we couldn’t due to logistics challenges. We have logistic issues with the venue, the Velodrome, which is now privatised. That was what caused the delay and issue of light,” he said.

Rather than abandon the programme or send athletes back to their respective states, the organisers opted to rearrange the schedule and use Thursday for technical activities.

“We adjusted our programme. So, we have taken referees and coaches’ courses and the examination is going on, and we have done the draw and weigh-in of all the athletes,” Jegede added.

The tournament has attracted 483 athletes from 18 states, underlining the growing importance of the championship to Nigerian karate and its development pathway.

Jegede stressed that the athletes would remain in Abuja despite the delay, noting that the weigh-in process was continuous and that coaches and officials needed to stay behind for the draw and other technical preparations.

“We can’t let the athletes go back home because of the delay because they are doing their weigh-in, and weigh-in is a continuous thing, and the coaches will wait behind to do the draw,” he said.

The championship is also expected to serve a crucial selection purpose, with the competition providing qualifiers for athletes seeking places on Nigeria’s team to the forthcoming African Karate Championship in Algeria.

Under the original programme, registration, technical briefings, referee courses and examinations were scheduled for August 18 and 19, while weigh-ins, coaches’ briefings and draws were to take place on Thursday morning before competition began at 10:30am.

With the revised schedule, the competition proper will now commence on Friday, August 21, and is expected to run through Saturday, August 22, with Sunday, August 23, set aside for the departure of delegates.

Despite the opening-day setback, KFN officials are hopeful that the adjusted programme will allow the tournament to proceed smoothly and provide the participating athletes with a strong platform to compete for national recognition and continental qualification.
