American actress Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly for the first time about the private struggle following the ALS diagnosis of her late partner, Bryan Randall.

Speaking on a new episode of the SmartLess podcast, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that Randall requested his diagnosis be kept completely confidential, leaving her unable to share the news with most friends or colleagues.

“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request. He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,” Bullock said, noting that her sister was initially the only person who knew.

Randall passed away at age 57 in 2023 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease.

Bullock explained that managing his care while keeping the diagnosis secret during the COVID-19 pandemic and raising two young children created significant emotional strain. She added that she began grieving Randall years before his death as his physical and mental condition changed.

The actress took a break from acting and Hollywood production to remain at home and focus on caring for her family during his illness.
