Alexander-Arnold Opens Up On Liverpool Fan Abuse

Trent Alexander-Arnold has spoken candidly for the first time about the aftermath of his acrimonious departure from Liverpool, revealing that the abuse he continues to receive from fans 14 months after joining Real Madrid still “hurts”.

After a disrupted first season in Spain and missing out on England’s World Cup squad, the 27‑year‑old told the Mirror, that the reaction to his departure from the club he supports “hurts”.

Alexander-Arnold was booed by fans in a home game against Arsenal in May 2025 – his first appearance since confirming his imminent departure – and his nearby mural was defaced multiple times with the word “rat”. He was sent an image of the vandalised mural by a friend, which weighed heavily on him.

“The booing and disappointment from Liverpool supporters is something I’m absolutely able to shoulder. I can understand it, in my own way,” he told the Mirror. “I heard a lot during that period that Liverpool fans didn’t want to be told how to feel or think, and I agree”.

But he admitted the experience was deeply personal: “Going back to Liverpool after everything that’s happened, it was on my mind. Even the thought of going into the away changing room was strange. I’d never actually stepped foot in there before”.

Alexander-Arnold drew a sharp distinction between fans’ anger expressed inside stadiums and the abuse he has received online.

“Abuse online and threats made via social DMs or in other ways are a sad part of life in 2026 if you’re in the public eye and doing things that create a lot of attention,” he said. “I choose to keep those things away from me because they don’t feel real”. He added that some messages have “crossed the line”.

However, he insisted the abuse does not reflect his actual experiences when visiting Merseyside: “Not a single interaction I’ve had in person reflects the sort of stuff you get online or via social media”.

Despite the treatment, Alexander-Arnold made clear his affection for Liverpool remains undiminished. “I still watch every game. I support them. I want to see them do well,” he said. “There will always be a place in my heart for Liverpool, no matter what. It is home to me”.
