Kano State government has inaugurated a committee to coordinate activities for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration scheduled for 1st October, 2026.
The committee, inaugurated by the commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Abdullahi Waiya, will be chaired by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Alhaji Sani Ali Rogo.
Inaugurating the committee in the ministry’s conference hall yesterday, Waiya said the committee was mandated to organise a befitting and colourful parade for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to inspect on 1st October.
He added that the committee would organise a public lecture ahead of the anniversary to mobilise the people and encourage their participation in the celebration.
The commissioner also directed the committee to organise a special prayer for peace and prosperity in Kano State and Nigeria, citing the security challenges confronting the country.
Other activities, according to him, include a novelty football match between security personnel and repentant political thugs, a unity road walk and visits to underprivileged members of society.
Waiya urged the committee to mobilise residents to celebrate the anniversary peacefully, either individually or in groups, and to introduce other activities to make the occasion memorable.
He assured the committee of the ministry’s support, saying lessons had been learned from challenges encountered during the previous two anniversary celebrations.
“We have taken note of the lessons learned and will work closely with all stakeholders to create an effective synergy, ensuring that this year’s celebration is seamless and even more successful,” he said.
The commissioner said the committee’s assignment commenced on 3 September and would run until 1 October.
Responding, the committee chairman, Rogo, urged members to work together to ensure the success of the anniversary activities.
He assured that the committee would collaborate with relevant stakeholders to deliver a peaceful and memorable celebration.
The committee comprises representatives of security agencies, government ministries and departments, civil society organisations, voluntary groups and other stakeholders.
