Nigeria’s Falconets will begin their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign against European powerhouse Spain on Monday, with head coach Moses Aduku insisting his side are ready to give everything in pursuit of victory.
The Group F encounter is scheduled for 5pm local time (4pm Nigeria time) at Stadion Sosnowiec, with Nigeria aiming to make a strong start to their latest quest for a maiden world title.
The Falconets are two-time runners-up at the tournament, having finished second in 2010 and 2014. Aduku believes the best approach against Spain is to treat the opening fixture as a final.
“We are looking forward to the match against Spain with high expectations. We are ready and set to go,” Aduku said.
“Spain is a good side, no doubt. However, we will approach the game like a cup final because we want to win. The three points will put us in good stead in our group-phase campaign.”
Spain’s recent record at the competition underlines the size of the challenge facing Nigeria. La Roja reached the final in France in 2018 before losing 3-1 to Japan, although Patricia Guijarro claimed both the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe.
Two years later, Spain went one step further in Costa Rica, defeating Japan to lift the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup title.
The Falconets have also enjoyed memorable moments at the global tournament. In 2010, Nigeria reached the final for the first time, overcoming the United States on penalties in a dramatic semi-final in Augsburg before losing 2-0 to hosts Germany in Bielefeld.
That run made Nigeria the first African team to reach the final of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
The Falconets repeated the feat four years later in Canada, with Asisat Oshoala producing a sensational individual campaign. The Nigerian forward scored seven goals to claim both the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe, despite Nigeria eventually losing 1-0 to Germany after extra time in Montreal.
The parallels between the two nations add further intrigue to Monday’s encounter, with both having produced teams capable of reaching the latter stages of the competition.
Aduku’s side will now look to turn Nigeria’s proud history into another strong campaign, beginning with the daunting task of overcoming the reigning champions.
Following the Spain clash, the Falconets will face China on Thursday before rounding off their Group F campaign against New Caledonia on Sunday.
Victory over Spain would provide Nigeria with an early advantage and potentially set the tone for their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages.
