Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up to replace the injured Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the change after Osimhen was ruled out of the two fixtures as he continues his recovery from a muscle strain.

Head coach Éric Chelle has consequently turned to Awoniyi to bolster his attacking options ahead of the crucial qualifying double-header.

The Super Eagles announced the Coventry City striker’s return in a brief statement on their official X account.

“Coventry City striker, Taiwo Awoniyi replaces Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Welcome back, Taiwo,” the post read.

Awoniyi’s recall provides Chelle with another experienced option in attack following the withdrawal of Osimhen, who sustained the injury while playing for Galatasaray.

The 28-year-old Awoniyi, who has previously represented Nigeria at senior level, will now join the squad as preparations begin for the two qualifiers.

The Super Eagles are expected to open their training camp in Uyo on Monday ahead of their first assignment against Madagascar.

Nigeria will host the Barea at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, next Thursday before travelling to Bissau for their second Group D fixture against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.

The two matches will be important for Nigeria’s campaign to secure qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Chelle now having to work around the absence of one of his principal attacking options.

Awoniyi will be expected to compete for a starting role as the Super Eagles seek maximum points from the two encounters and maintain their push for a place at the continental tournament.
