Aruna Leads African Charge As French Pro B League Serves Off

Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna made an impressive start to his French Pro B League campaign, leading a strong showing by African table tennis players in the opening round.

The Nigerian star marked his debut for Amiens on Tuesday, September 22, battling to a 3-2 victory over Lille before producing an even more commanding performance against Iranian Hossein Hodaei.

Aruna, renowned for his powerful forehand and competitive spirit, overcame a difficult start to defeat Hodaei 3-1 and underline his credentials as one of the continent’s leading players.

His performances provided an early boost for Amiens, who are seeking promotion back to France’s top division. The club currently sit third in the standings, with Aruna expected to play a key role in their promotion push.

Algeria’s Mehdi Bouloussa was another African standout, helping Courbevoie STT secure a 3-2 victory over Compiégnois TT.

Bouloussa was instrumental in his side’s success, producing the quality and composure required to edge a closely contested encounter.

At Nantes, Nigerian table tennis legend Segun Toriola combined his responsibilities as player and coach as Nantes secured a 3-1 victory over Frejus AMSL.

The eight-time Olympian brought his vast experience to a Nantes side that also featured Egyptian youngster Youssef Abdelaziz and Greek veteran Panagiotis Gionis.

The result gave Toriola a winning start to the campaign in his dual role as coach and player.

Nigeria’s Olajide Omotayo and Taiwo Mati were not involved in Le Havre ATT’s opening fixture, but their side began the season with a 3-1 victory over Boulogne Billancourt AC.

In another impressive display by an African player, Algeria’s Stephane Ouaiche helped Caen TTC to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Miramas AS.

The result moved Caen to the top of the early standings and provided Ouaiche with an encouraging start to the campaign.

Compatriot Maheidine Bella also featured for Proville ASL, although his side suffered a 3-1 defeat against Pontoise-Cergy AS. Bella claimed his team’s only point of the night.

For Benin Republic’s Salifou Abdel-Kader, however, it was a difficult opening night as he was left out of Compiégnois TT’s line-up during their 3-0 defeat to Bouloussa’s Courbevoie.

With the opening round now completed, attention turns to the next round on Tuesday, September 29.

A particularly intriguing fixture will see Aruna’s Amiens travel to face Toriola’s Nantes, setting up an all-Nigerian contest between two generations of the country’s table tennis.

With Caen leading the early standings and Amiens occupying third position, Aruna and his teammates will be looking to maintain their momentum as they continue their push towards the top of the table.
