Super Falcons Seek Olympic Redemption Against Comoros In Ikenne

The Super Falcons will begin another bid for Olympic qualification on Friday when they face Comoros in the first leg of their 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games women’s football qualifier at the Remo Stars Sports Stadium, Ikenne-Remo.

Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm, with Nigeria looking to put the disappointment of their recent African championship and World Cup qualification setbacks behind them and make a positive start to the Olympic campaign.

The Falcons endured a difficult 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco, where they suffered a 1-0 quarter-final defeat by Cameroon before losing 2-1 to South Africa in the subsequent CAF/FIFA play-off.

The results ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and also saw the Falcons miss out on the WAFCON semi-finals for the first time in the tournament’s history.

With the Olympic qualifiers providing a fresh opportunity, Nigeria must negotiate four rounds and eight matches to secure one of Africa’s two tickets to the Los Angeles Games, having featured at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Friday’s encounter will therefore be the first test of a rebuilding exercise under interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who took charge following the changes that swept through Nigerian football after the Morocco setbacks.

Eguavoen, the Nigeria Football Federation’s Technical Director and former Super Eagles captain and coach, has assembled a squad containing a blend of established internationals and emerging players for the double-header.

The Falcons will be expected to draw heavily on their experienced players, including goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who has returned to regular club football in England with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Defenders Michelle Alozie, Shukurat Oladipo and Glory Ogbonna are also expected to provide experience at the back, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Jennifer Echegini and Christy Ucheibe offer quality and experience in midfield.

Up front, Uchenna Kanu, Gift Monday and Joy Omewa are among the attacking options available to Eguavoen as Nigeria seek to impose their quality on a Comoros side that reached the meeting with the Falcons after an emphatic 30-0 aggregate victory in the previous round.

However, Nigeria cannot afford to approach the tie solely on the basis of their opponents’ previous results.

The Falcons’ recent struggles highlighted concerns over finishing, defensive organisation and preparations, areas Eguavoen will be expected to address in his first competitive assignment with the team.

Nigeria created several opportunities during their WAFCON campaign but struggled to convert them, while defensive lapses, including a set-piece error against Cameroon, proved costly.

The team also endured disrupted preparations and late arrivals of players from their respective clubs, while injuries affected the availability and readiness of some key members.

Those problems will be under scrutiny when the Falcons take on Comoros, with Eguavoen expected to prioritise defensive solidity and greater efficiency in front of goal.

For the players, the match offers an opportunity to restore confidence after a disappointing period and begin the long road towards Los Angeles 2028 on a positive note.

The return leg is scheduled for Monday, 13 October, also at the Remo Stars Sports Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.

For the 10-time African champions, the immediate objective is clear: build an advantage on Friday and take the first step towards another Olympic appearance.
