Bauchi State first lady, Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed, has donated four sewing machines and N300,000 in financial assistance to seven rape survivors in Katagum local government area to improve their economic well-being.
Hajia Mohammed, who is also the chairperson of the Bauchi State Action Committee on Gender-based Violence (GBV), made the donation yesterday at an event in Azare, the headquarters of Katagum LGA.
Represented by the committee’s secretary, Hajiya Talatu Musa, the governor’s wife said the intervention was aimed at alleviating the hardship faced by the beneficiaries, many of whom have limited sources of income to cater for themselves and their babies.
She explained that four beneficiaries received sewing machines to support their livelihoods, while the remaining three received N100,000 each as financial assistance.
According to her, the committee was established in 2020 to address the growing incidence of rape and related cases involving girls across the state, describing the issue as a serious societal challenge that requires collective action.
She urged members of the public to report suspected cases of rape to the appropriate authorities to ensure that victims receive the necessary support and that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Aisha also disclosed that the committee had a monitoring and evaluation team to track the use of items distributed to beneficiaries.
She warned that anyone found selling the donated items would face the full wrath of the law.
One of the beneficiaries, Hajara Abdulrahim, expressed appreciation to the First Lady for her commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and supporting survivors of sexual violence.
She pledged to make proper use of the items provided to improve her livelihood.khalid
