The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified efforts to consolidate its nationwide structures ahead of the 2027 general elections, as its National Working Committee (NWC) met with chairmen from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja on Tuesday.
The meeting, held at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, brought together the national leadership and state chairmen to discuss the party’s organisational strategy and electoral prospects.
However, the meeting was also marked by concerns over alleged intimidation, harassment and attacks against PDP candidates in some states, with the Chairman of the State Chairmen Forum warning that the party would no longer tolerate violence against its members.
The forum chairman disclosed that its leadership visited Ebonyi State last week over alleged harassment, intimidation, arrests and killings involving PDP candidates.
He said a petition was being prepared for submission to the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies.
He specifically raised concerns over the situation in Ebonyi under Governor Francis Nwifuru, alleging that candidates had faced hostility in the state.
“The forum will not take it lightly anymore if any of our candidates are harassed, intimidated or killed because of mere elections,” he said.
He added, “It’s a contest. Winner must emerge,” insisting that candidates should be allowed to participate in the electoral process without fear of intimidation or violence.
The allegations had not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
Beyond the security concerns, the forum chairman pledged the commitment of state chairmen to work with the national leadership to improve the party’s performance in the 2027 elections.
“We are ready to partner with our National Working Committee in any aspect of endeavour that would come up and that wants us to play a critical role,” he said.
In his remarks, PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, commended the state chairmen for overseeing the nomination of candidates for state Houses of Assembly, the House of Representatives, the Senate and governorship positions across the federation.
He said the party would continue to follow its constitution and established guidelines in conducting its internal affairs, ruling out any departure from laid-down procedures.
“No single process will be omitted under the leadership of this National Working Committee, including that of caucus and the expanded meeting of our great party,” Mohammed said.
The national chairman also expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in the 2027 elections, saying the NWC and party structures nationwide had a responsibility to work towards electoral success.
